He initially made a name for himself as a comedian performing stand-up while serving in the United States Marine Corps, and later started his own series titled “The Drew Carey Show”. He was born Drew Allison Carey on May 23, 1958, in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States, to parents Lewis and Beulah Carey. His siblings are his two brothers by the names of Neil and Roger. The former passed away in 2010.
Together with his siblings, Drew grew up in the Old Brooklyn neighborhood of Cleveland. Unfortunately for the family, his father died of heart failure when Drew was just eight years old.
For his education, Drew attended James Ford Rhodes High School, and played the cornet and trumpet in the marching band during his time there. After completing his secondary education, he enrolled at Kent State University for his bachelor’s degree.
Notably, the actor was expelled on two instances for poor academic performance. Afterward, he joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve where he spent six years serving as a field radio operator.
Before embarking on his journey into comedy, Drew worked as a bank teller and also served as a waiter at Denny’s in Las Vegas.

In 1986, he won an open mic contest and was chosen to become the Master of Ceremonies (MC) at the Cleveland Comedy Club.
Two years later he entered the national spotlight when he competed in Star Search. Afterward, he appeared on shows like “Late Night with David Letterman” and “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson”.
In 1994, Drew’s first stand-up comedy special titled “Drew Carey: Human Cartoon” was broadcast on Showtime. The following year, “The Drew Carey Show” first aired on ABC.
