James Thomas Denton Jr. is a gifted American film and television actor who is best known for his roles as Mike Delfino on the ABC drama series Desperate Housewives (2004–2012) and Dr. Sam Radford on the Hallmark Channel comedy series Good Witch (2015–present).

James Denton’s Biography & Career

Denton was born in Nashville, Tennessee, in the United States on January 20, 1963. The second of three children of J.T. Denton and Mary Jean Woolslair Denton, he was raised in nearby Goodlettsville along with his siblings.

His father who was a dentist and had served in the military, passed away in 1993, while his mother followed suit in 2002 from complications of breast cancer.

His parents raised him a Southern Baptist, and he grew up to become a Minister of Music at the Westmoreland United Methodist Church in Tennessee.

He experienced his secondary education at Goodlettsville High School before proceeding to the University of Tennessee where he majored in Television/Journalism, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in advertising. Before switching his career options to acting, Denton sold advertising for several radio stations.

He started acting at a community theater in Nashville when he was 23 years old and later moved to California to pursue acting as a profession. In the early days of his acting career, he was sometimes listed in the credits as Jamie Denton.

While living in Chicago, James Denton’s first role was in the film “A Streetcar Named Desire”, and his last was in the French farce, “Lapin Lapin” in which he acted as the terrorist “Bebert”. In the years between the two roles, James was a company member at Strawdog Theater Ensemble and at The Griffin Theater.

He added a steady sequence of roles and honors to his quickly mounting list of achievements, including composing the music for and performing in “the Night Hank Williams Died”, playing a lead role in the world premiere of “Flesh and Blood”, and his depiction of preacher “C.C. Showers” in “Diviners” – which earned him a Joseph Jefferson Award nomination for a Best Actor.

After moving to Los Angeles, the dedicated actor carried on with performing on stage, especially during time away from whichever television series he was attached to at the time.

While in high school, Denton had a relationship with country music singer Deana Carter. He got married to Jenna Lyn Ward in 1997 and divorced her three years later.

In 2002, he wedded professional trainer Erin O’Brien, and they’ve been together up till this day. The husband and wife previously lived in Glendale, California with their two children. After the Desperate Housewives series ended, Denton moved with his family to Chanhassen, Minnesota where they presently reside.
