Early life

Tierney was brought up in Boston’s Hyde Park neighborhood, the oldest son of three children in an Irish American Catholic family. Pat (née James), her mother, is a real estate agent and her father, the late Joseph M. Tierney, was an influential Boston politician who served on the Boston City Council for 15 years.

Tierney went to Mount Alvernia Academy Elementary School and Notre Dame Academy in Hingham, Massachusetts, where she studied drama and performed at the Boston Globe Drama Festival. She started attending New York University after she graduated, where she specialized in dance and then drama.


Tierney relocated to Los Angeles in 1987 after making an appearance in several plays, and her big break came with a role in Disney’s made-for-TV film Student Exchange. Her first starring role was in Dead Women in Lingerie, a low-budget independent film shot in 24 days.

Tierney had a variety of minor roles in film and television, along with a co-starring role in 704 Hauser, a short-lived All in the Family spin-off in 1994. From 1995 to 1999, she did receive national exposure as the lead in the sitcom NewsRadio. Tierney appeared on ER from 1999 to 2008 as Nurse Abigail “Abby” Lockhart, a character who began as a guest appearance in November 1999 and then expanded to a full-time regular role as an ER nurse and, later, a doctor after completing medical school. Tierney married Billy Morrissette, an actor-director, on February 1, 1993, two days before her 28th birthday, after meeting on the set of an unaired television series.  Due to major disagreements, she filed for a divorce in 2006. Tierney officiated at the wedding of her acquaintance and former ER co-star Parminder Nagra to photographer James Stenson on February 1, 2009.

Tierney had undergone breast cancer surgery in 2009 to remove a tumor. She was set in Parenthood, but due to time constraints with her cancer treatments, she had to depart, and Lauren Graham replaced her. Tierney finished treatment in 2010 and returned to work in a stage production.

Tierney was struck by a vehicle while riding her bike in 2018 and thrown to the ground. Despite being moved in an ambulance while wearing a neck brace, she was later discharged from the hospital with no major injuries.
