Queen Latifah was born as Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, United States on 18th March 1970. Her father, Lance Owens worked in the police service, and her mother’s name is Rita Owens. 

 She was eight years old when her parents divorced and she had to share most of her growing up days with her mother, who played the role of a catalyst in her music career.  

Her brother, Lance Owens also worked in the police service until his death in a motorbike accident in 1992.
